Sorting series books by themes:

Each book series has been given one or more categories to help you find the sort of books you like. Some series will have one or two books that fit a category but it will not be placed in that category unless the main focus fits.

Please note, the Bobbsey Twins did not start out as mysteries but by the time they were revised in the 1950s-1970s the series became predominately a mystery series for young children so it is marked as such. If you read original text versions, you won’t understand why, but trust me.

Boys/Girls/Young Children: Obviously plenty of girls have read the books marketed for boys and plenty of boys have read those marketed for girls, so the distinction is fairly meaningless. The books, at the time, were marketed as if these terms were mutually exclusive and unlikely to have much crossover of interest. Note that books aimed at young children often have pairs of children (a boy and a girl) while stories involving teenagers tend to have the focus on one set of heroes and some light romance with the opposite sex (especially “girl” series).

Historical: By this I mean not books that deal with very recent events of the time they were written but those who looked at a more distant past. Obviously most of these books feel historical to us. However, as any historical fiction writer will tell you, it is a different task about writing about a time you did not live in. That is what I am going for with this category.
